Our habitat is part of what we experience. It affects us and leaves its mark on us, just as we leave our mark on it. The eponymous region is in the Australian state of New South Wales, famous for its white beaches, wild nature and perfect surfing conditions. This land harboured hippie communes and communities looking for alternative ways of living, and it is where the characters depicted here live: a group of teenagers who call themselves Our Strong Brotherhood, a family of boys, a small community brought together by friendship and growing up together.

These portraits of young men were taken against the background of their homes and of a nature whose awe-inspiring beauty determines who they are and who they will become. It is hard to tell when the pictures were taken; the hairstyles and clothes provide little information. One thing is certain: the hot summer will last forever. — Łukasz Rusznica

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
