Published for the exhibition Issei Suda: Fushikaden, Centre d’Art GwinZegal, 5 July 2024

A new edition made for the artist's exhibition at the Centre d'Art GwinZegal in France in July 2024. The series appeared irregularly in eight installments between December 1975 and December 1977 in a monthly Japanese magazine; the pictures later reappeared alongside published and unpublished work in a 1978 volume that has long been out of print.

“Now finally, after all those years, these are being published once again, this time in the form of a complete edition including 38 items that weren't in the original book. Marking a point in my career when I was finally at the start line at the ready to go, the series, composed of frames shot in daily life situations and on the road in the Kanto and Tohoku areas, is for me a deeply emotional affair, and at once a slightly embarrassing document of my youth that reveals just how little has changed.” — from the afterword

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
