Extraordinary photos of the Berlin Wall and its surroundings from the summer of 1990. The color photographs in this excitingly designed photo book transport us directly to the historical “in-between” of those days.
The photographs that Josef Wolfgang Mayer took in the summer of 1990 show the Berlin Wall, its breakthroughs and remains. The images are photographed as triptychs, expanding the field of vision into a panorama. The book follows the principle, consists only of fold-out pages and thus always creates new moments of surprise when a new landscape opens up before the eyes of the viewer, transforming the past into the future. Countless details tell old and new stories of these stormy days and hold memories. The dangers that once emanated from this place can still be felt in some of the recordings, at the same time people and vehicles make their way through improvised crossings and reconnected streets.
Fallow land emerges as free architectural forms between the cracked seams of stone and barbed wire. The summer of freedom has begun.
