Elisa Caldana’s The Falcon of Karachi investigates stories of the laggar falcon, a species endemic to Pakistan, India, and Myanmar that is slowly disappearing in the wild. The artist (b. 1986, Pordenone, Italy; lives in the Hague, the Netherlands) elaborates counternarratives and counter-images that attempt to shift the perception of this bird of prey, considered a minor falcon, and draw attention to its right to life, regardless of its reputation or usefulness in the eyes of human beings. The project is supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture under the Italian Council program (2023) and by the Mondriaan Fund, the Netherlands.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
