The first artist selected for the photographic residency established by Belmond, Mexican photographer Cecy Young spent two weeks at Castello di Casole, a restored 10th century castle nestled in an estate of over 3,200 acres in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. Surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and hills dotted with cypresses, the property—once a seasonal retreat for Italian director Luchino Visconti—embodies a dimension suspended between history, nature and quiet magnificence. Initially trained as a painter, Young approaches her subjects with the sensitivity and tactile attention typical of pictorial practice. Celebrated for his work in fashion for Dior Beauty, Chanel and Hermès, as well as his editorials in Vogue Japan, Numéro Tokyo and Harper's Bazaar Latin America, Young infuses his images with a sense of poetic stillness and intimate emotional resonance. During the residency he walked around the estate without a script, letting himself be guided solely by light, textures and fleeting impressions. His photographs do not construct a narrative, but convey an atmosphere—a meditation on memory, time and the fragile beauty of the ordinary. From the shadows sliding on an old chair to the morning dew on a leaf, his gaze captures both grace and impermanence, that subtle tension between reality and imagination.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
