LAMF: Three Days in Berlin, 1987 by John Gossage, initially conceived as a hand-assembled book exclusively for his friends, is a perfect example of a photobook as an art form. Gossage used a custom telephoto lens and 6000 ASA film to photograph the area around the Berlin Wall and “no man's land,” capturing the somber atmosphere of a divided city. This new edition of LAMF, created in close collaboration with the photographer, features an expanded selection of 44 images (double the original) printed in rich three-color with a special UV screen varnish to emulate the original gelatin silver prints applied to support. The book also includes a new interview with publisher Jordan Weitzman about the genesis of the work and Gossage's long obsession with Berlin, also the theme of his acclaimed books Stadt des Schwarz and Berlin in the Time of the Wall. What was once one of the rarest books in Gossage's oeuvre is now available to all: a photobook masterpiece by one of its most prolific exponents and a moving document of the history of the Cold War.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
