Through photomontage, Fulford merges time and space into a single daydream, inviting us to discover the mystical dimension hidden in everyday life, perceived even before being understood. For almost thirty years, Jason Fulford has based his research on the belief that the meaning does not reside so much in the single photograph, but in the sequence and the elements that surround it: images that are induced to create rhymes, echoes or dissonances with adjacent ones, ranging between books, exhibitions, publishing and performances. Frozen Features pushes this instinct further, giving life to a visual language made of stratifications randomly composed starting from images created between 1996 and 2026. The result is a fascinating narrative, governed by composition and chance: a sort of metaphysical slot machine that sifts through memory, returning fragments two by two, guided by intuition. Fulford's juxtapositions range freely between dimensional scales, places and chronologies: a tiny rolled leaf contrasted with a vast panorama, the silhouette of a hand floating on a bedspread, the signs traced by civilization superimposed directly on the landscape, transforming each image into a palimpsest - a surface on which one continually writes, where the oldest traces resurface under the new ones. A dry humor emerges and vanishes, formal echoes accumulate and the elusive relationship between the single image and the narrative is recomposed within square shots, rich in details and full of subliminal suggestions. In 1942, Barbara Morgan wrote that "modern life is photomontage": two distinct elements that share a single moment, just as happens with thought and emotion. Frozen Features welcomes this intuition, overcoming the historical weight of photomontage as a technique to arrive at something more similar to gaming: an irresistible and intuitive mix that, boldly and without hesitation, reaches straight to the heart.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
