Gabriele Basilico followed the work of Aldo Rossi for nearly twenty years, accompanying his rise to a leading figure in international architecture (Pritzker Prize winner in 1990). His photographs reveal a profound professional affinity: the two shared a Milanese origin, degrees from the Polytechnic, an interest in social issues and the transformation of cities, and, even more, the moral outlook with which they operated in the world. Raised in a Milan where industrial civilization was dying, they found in that climate the opportunity to create a new language that did not forget tradition. This volume brings together for the first time Basilico's photographs of Rossi's architecture and is enriched by contributions from Chiara Spangaro and Pier Paolo Tamburelli, project notes compiled by Rossi, and the writings they dedicated to each other.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
