In April 2013 the photographers Nico Krebs and Taiyo Onorato — who have worked together for twelve years — set off eastward in a 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser. The approximate route had been traced with a finger on the map, as had the hoped-for endpoint: Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia. A real expedition: a departure into the mystical realm of the East — Eurasia, Central Asia, the foothills of the Himalayas, the forests of Siberia, the Stan republics, the gigantic expanse of the former Soviet Union. A vast continent of which very few clear, defined images are anchored in our heads, rather a fog of history and world politics. Krebs and Onorato set out in search of these images, wanting to reproduce them, to create them themselves. Continental Drift is a trip along the borders of documentation and fiction of an unknown terrain and its possible past and speculative future. Central were the moments of the absolutely foreign, inaccessible and bizarre, paired with an impressive openness and hospitality. Many of the regions traversed are in flux — between millennia-old tradition, post-communist self-positioning, religious, territorial and ethnic turmoil, and the urgent wish to connect to global turbo-capitalism; the search for identity is palpable.
