Over six years, photographer Mark Power travelled across the United States creating a visual portrait of a country undergoing social and political change. Good Morning, America (Volume I) is the first part of a long-term five-book project exploring the tension between the myth of America and its everyday reality.

Moving through towns and cities across the country, Power combines the perspective of both traveller and outsider, capturing landscapes and moments with a cinematic scale. Unlike many classic photographic surveys of America made by American photographers, his work reflects the distance and curiosity of a foreign observer.

The project grew from Power’s involvement in Postcards from America in 2012, a collaborative initiative responding to contemporary life in the US through photography and publishing. Ambitious in scale, the series aims to document a transformative period in American history spanning the Obama and Trump years.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
