The Westfalenpark is the green lung of Dortmund and one of the largest inner-city parks in Europe. Three national garden shows have been staged here since 1959 in addition to countless festivals and major events. Boasting a remarkable variety of landscape as well as different water spaces, the public park has an amazingly high diversity of plants and is home to many animals. The facilities within the grounds include restaurants, cafés, and important architectural structures such as the “sun sail” by Günther Behnisch at the center. The park also offers plenty of recreational facilities including a miniature train, a cable car, a TV tower, and children’s playgrounds. This publication presents the Westfalenpark in great detail by juxtaposing recent photographs by Daniel Sadrowski and historical images. In this way, the development of the park over the years can easily be traced. Numerous texts by Dortmund’s leading personalities from the world of entertainment, culture, politics, and sports provide interesting facts as well as amusing and personal anecdotes. Together they bring the park’s history and its stories to life. Featuring texts by Alexandra Apfelbaum, Inke Arns, Alexander Bayer, Moritz Bergmann, Sascha Bisley, Hannes Brock, Lars Brodherr, Horst-Dieter Czembor, Fritz Eeckenga, Gabriel Feltz, Eckhard Gerber, Monika Greve, Carsten Jäger, Bruno Knust, Annette Kulozik, Thomas Raphael, Simone Rikeit, Patrick Salmen, Ullrich Sierau, Wolfgang Sonne and Neven Subotić

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
