Photographing the relationship between humans and the natural world has been Yasuyuki Takagi's theme for some twenty-five years. A city boy always drawn to nature yet feeling it foreign, he was changed by six months living in Brazil and the Amazon, then by the abandoned lots and community gardens of New York where plants reclaim the urban jungle. In the back alleys of Tokyo, where he grew up and still lives, rows of potted plants tended by enthusiasts and neighbours bring gardens and green into the street — a 'nature made by people'. Imagining a viewer a hundred years from now, he believes this free-spirited, communal way of sharing nature, always at risk of being swept away by development, deserves to be left as a record.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
