Tamano gathers the platinum portraits Sakiko Nomura presented at the Setouchi Triennale 2013, of forty-eight elderly residents of Tamano City in Okayama Prefecture. For Nomura, who had mainly photographed male nudes, a subject she found beautiful existed among the old. Made with a digital camera in full colour, the forty-eight portraits unsettle the heart of the viewer, and the resonance with that beauty is the very act of photographing she has continued for over twenty years. During the shoots the sitters' eyes seemed to pass through the lens to enjoy a confrontation with another self beyond it, an homage to the beauty of human life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
