In her project Men Behind the Scenes, begun in 1998, Shoko Ogushi infiltrates ultimate male societies coloured by order, rank, uniforms, rules and absurdity, pursuing the beauty and mystery of men through a woman's eyes. This first Asian chapter is the Shaolin Temple on Mount Song in China, birthplace of Chinese Zen brought by Bodhidharma, a World Heritage temple where monks young and old live by Zen, practise martial arts and dispense medicine. Granted permission to photograph in off-limits areas, she spent three years close to the monks' daily lives; through one woman's curious gaze, free of criticism, envy or preconception, the heavy gate of Shaolin is opened.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
