Graphic collages
At the end of nineteen journeys begun in 1991 to Pyongyang, capital of North Korea, the photographer undertook an ethno-photographic project of graphic collages titled Soleil généreux, after the star cited in the country's patriotic anthem, whereas it is the moon that lies at the heart of South Korea's anthem. While it is impossible for a foreigner in North Korea to produce incriminating photographs, showing the excess of the regime, the docility of its population, and the visual illusion that serves the DPRK are ways of better revealing the dictatorial reign — and nothing serves this better than starting from the materiality of the images available on site. The collages thus mix comic-strip plates, posters, stamps and propaganda pins with photographs taken while attending various official events.
