Missen als een ronde vorm' (The roundness of loss) is a publication about art as an 'in memoriam'. It contains poems, personal texts, works by Hanne Hagenaars and texts based on artworks by others. A book about loss, mourning, missing and rituals. How can we keep a deceased loved one close to us? Through specific artworks, Hagenaars discusses the possible ways in which someone can 'live on' and the context of this commemoration. How does remembrance relate to ideas about life and death, to religion, spirituality or the social context? Hanne Hagenaars: 'How to remember someone is a subject that has long fascinated me. Death is the great unknown in our lives; everyone is a little afraid of it. Death makes those left behind lonely, there is grief, and often words are lacking to speak about death. Loss and grief are invisible - how do you give them form? How do you make sure you do not lose someone completely?'

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
