Photographs taken during winter stays in the southern Polish mountains
You say that I live at the end of the world? The end of the world is there, on the left. I live even further, I live beyond.' In 9 Gates of No Return, Agata Grzybowska presents nine people who, for various reasons and life choices, decided to give up their lives in the city and settle in the woods of the Bieszczady Mountains in southern Poland. Bieszczady was a secluded place by then, practically uninhabited. These people have been living there since the sixties to the eighties, frequently in very rough conditions, in houses they built by themselves, without access to running water or electricity. And now, after such long time, they do not have any possibility to come back to their past lives or 'normality'. They do not have families, nothing to come back to. Comprised of two parts, Grzybowska's book contains extremely powerful portraits and landscapes printed in quadtones, accompanied by colourful Polaroids and memorable handwritten interviews. All photographs were taken during several of Grzybowska's winter stays in the Bieszczady Mountains.
