Black-and-white photographs of British leisure and seaside life made in the late sixties
Designed and produced by RRB Photobooks
Part of RRB's documentary-classics line, dedicated to the foundational figures of British photography
Tony Ray-Jones is an RRB Photobooks monograph dedicated to one of the founding figures of British documentary photography. Working in the late sixties and very early seventies before his early death at the age of thirty, Ray-Jones travelled around England photographing the small rituals of British leisure—seaside resorts, brass-band parades, ballroom dances, beauty contests, summer fêtes, end-of-pier shows, lawn parties and the gathering crowds in front of the camera. His acute eye for the simultaneous absurdity and dignity of the British at play directly influenced a younger generation of photographers, including Martin Parr, who has spoken often of Ray-Jones's importance to his own development. This volume gathers a focused selection of his photographs—many of them now-canonical—and presents them in a generous hardcover edit. The book sits alongside RRB's other monographs of overlooked or underseen foundational British photographers, returning a classic body of work to wider circulation in a careful new edition.
