The Dynamic is a project by Argentine photographer Sebastián Bruno made in the working-men's social clubs of the South Wales Valleys—venues born from coalfield communities that, in the years since the closure of the mines, have persisted as the social heart of small post-industrial towns. The book takes its title from one specific club, The Dynamic in Tonypandy, and uses it as an emblem for a wider network of similar venues: the function room with its raked stage, the smoking entrance, the loyal members card, the meat raffle, the line dancers, the karaoke night, the brass-band rehearsal, the bingo caller. Bruno, who came to the Valleys as an outsider via the documentary photography programme at Newport, builds a slow, sympathetic portrait of the clubs and the people who keep them alive—often older members in committee or behind the bar—and asks what these spaces hold together in a period when the wider economy has withdrawn its supports. The work was made over several years and is the product of long, returning visits.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
