Nothing Lasts Forever brings together photographs by Peter Mitchell drawn from over fifty years of work in Leeds, gathered to accompany his retrospective of the same name at The Photographers' Gallery, London. A Londoner who moved to Leeds in 1972 and never left, Mitchell has spent over half a century photographing the backstreets, corner shops, tower blocks, scarecrows, aproned artisans and proud shopkeepers of his adopted city. His work in colour has an unfussy, curious documentary appeal, all muted tones and small details—the lettering of shopfronts taking on a nostalgia decades later. There is also a sustained playfulness: someone once told Mitchell, now in his eighties, that his photographs felt like they had been taken by an alien visiting Earth, and he turned that comment into an ongoing conceit, interspersing NASA pictures of the surface of Mars among the timeworn shopfronts and ageing houses of Leeds. The book holds the alien wonder and the deeply local in the same hand, a quietly revolutionary view of an English city seen from a tilt-shift slightly off the everyday axis.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
