Five series of photographs from the photographer recent work
Essay 'The Fragile Look' by philosopher Carlos Skliar

Subida al Cielo is the first monograph by Galician photographer Lúa Ribeira, an associate member of Magnum Photos based in Bristol. The book presents five works by Ribeira: Subida al Cielo (Ascent into Heaven), Las Visiones, Aristócratas, La Jungla and Los Afortunados. In each, Ribeira addresses subjects with a long relationship to documentary photography and representation, often in the context of institutionally constructed or maintained groups, or in spontaneous anti-structures that emerge on the margins of society—Holy Week processions in Andalusia, displaced young migrants at the Morocco–Spain boundary, encounters with people in various states of dissociation and elation in the public parks of Bristol, life along the United States–Mexico border at Tijuana. Her work is collaborative, deeply researched and built around the unexpected encounter. The volume is accompanied by an essay by philosopher Carlos Skliar entitled 'The Fragile Look'. Ribeira's photographs often hold their subjects in productive tension between document and construction, between fact and idea.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
