Fifty years have passed since the beginning of a silence that weighed more than words, since the moment fear found its place in homes, squares, and gazes… Remembering dictatorships means looking at the present with clearer eyes. The wounds that plague Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, and many other countries aren’t just a thing of the past: they continue to teach us how fragile freedom is, how precious memory is. The light in the darkroom wasn’t just a technical procedure: it was a challenge to fear, a way to stay alive in a country that was wiping out its people. I still remember the smell of acid and the beating of my heart in the dark, as I tried to determine if the film had loaded properly. Every time I closed the lab door, I knew that one noise, one voice too many, was enough for my life to end there. I shot with a discreet camera, avoiding elaborate tricks and bulky lenses that could give away the image: on the street, a long telephoto lens could be mistaken for a rifle, and anyone associated with a “rifle” ended up disappearing.
