Essay by Simone Van Saarloos

In November 2014 Charlotte Dumas began photographing the eight native horse breeds of Japan. Once necessary for farming and transportation, most of these indigenous breeds have lost their practical purpose and have declined in number; mostly confined to small islands, the horses could never migrate and their future is uncertain. Some have become symbols of their place, like the Yonaguni horse, which, with the world's largest moth and the marlin, is on the manhole covers of its remote island. This limited artist book documents the project to date with horses from the islands of Yonaguni, Miyakojima, Nagano and Hokkaido.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
