After Alpine Star, in which he recast his hometown newspaper photographs, Ron Jude's Other Nature adds a more intimate, diaristic strain, combining two sets of his own 4 × 5 colour pictures made between 2001 and 2008 into an investigation of the "slippery threshold of narrative" in still images. Anonymous motel rooms and the stranger regions of the American landscape might at first read as an ecological critique in the vein of the New Topographics, but as floral patterns, wood grain and sunlight interrupt and inform one another, the book shifts into a more abstract, subjective register.
