While sorting the vernacular photography collection of Peter J. Cohen, a trove of more than 20,000 prints, Melissa Catanese pursued an alternate reading, drifting from simple typology to something personal, intuitive and openly poetic. Her artist book is rooted in the mystery and delight of the found image and the snapshot aesthetic, but pushes beneath the nostalgic surface and recasts the pictures as luminous transmissions of anticipation, fear and desire. Like an album of pop songs about a girl, or a civilisation, on the verge of transformation, it cycles through themes and counter-themes: moon and ocean, violence and tenderness, innocence and experience, masks and nakedness.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
