From 2008 to 2012, often in the dead of summer, the American painter Jake Longstreth photographed the dusty, utilitarian Central Valley of California, once occupied by the huge Tulare Lake. With a tonal restraint that echoes his flatly realistic paintings, the photographs capture the hazy, blinding sunlight and muted palette of a region transformed from a lush wild terrain, celebrated by John Muir as "one smooth, continuous bed of honey-bloom", into monotonously fertile industrial farmland.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
