Continuing the photographic language that began with Paloma al aire (2011), Ricardo Cases articulates, between 2010 and 2020, the meanings of his immediate environment, the Levante region of Spain. Beyond the classic icons of beach and paella he observes symbols with deeper meanings: music bands, palm groves, the construction industry, and the red palm weevil, a parasite that kills palm trees. Palm tree, charanga band and weevil form a triangle that stands for the spiritual map of Spain's systemic crash, a violent and screeching collision. Based on collage, the images appear affected by blight and partly faded; their superposition makes a raving musical score whose structure is chaos.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
