Quatrani means "kids" in the dialect of L'Aquila. Seventeen years after the earthquake that struck the city, leaving displaced people, injured and dead, the children of that time have become young adults. They grew up in what was called a "forbidden city": an urban but atypical generation, raised without the structures of a city and without the reference points and gathering places that every city offers its children. These young people found a space of their own all the same: their relationship became a meeting place, a bond that nourished a solid and deep friendship, fed by shared experiences, a sense of absence and a strong affective and social resilience. Quatrani was born to tell the story of this generation and keeps following it over time. It does not tell the reconstruction of L'Aquila through building sites or buildings but through people: the ties, the memory, the discovery of the city and the passage from adolescence to adulthood. The project began in the winter of 2018–2019 and was built over the years together with its protagonists. In that time they changed, and so did the city.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
