With this photobook by Katalin Deér, the Fondation Beyeler sheds light on the experience visitors have when they encounter art, nature and architecture. The renowned museum of modern and contemporary art near Basel invited the photographer and artist for three years as a silent observer of its evolution. With her sensitive eye for the special in the everyday, she has captured in images the magic of the much-loved place, making visible the many relationships that connect art with its surroundings and with people. Inside and outside change with the seasons and with the shifting exhibitions and cultural events. At the same time, the photographs record the transformation of the Fondation Beyeler itself: Renzo Piano's famous museum building is being extended by new buildings by Peter Zumthor into a new ensemble, and the architecture fits respectfully into the listed park with its giant trees, water-lily ponds, historic buildings and modern sculptures. The photographs are shaped by the immediate perception and observation of art, nature, architecture and the people who move, and are moved, within them.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
