Terra Vermelha is the result of a decade-long photographic investigation into the Amazon Rainforest, challenging the idealised image of the region as an untouched natural paradise. Instead of presenting a mythologised landscape, the work reveals a territory marked by environmental destruction, social conflict and rapid transformation.

The photographs move through burned forests, deforested land and territories shaped by disputes between cattle ranchers, landless communities and environmental activists. From rural areas, the narrative shifts toward cities and informal settlements affected by escalating violence linked to drug trafficking and police operations. Other images explore the growing influence of evangelical religion, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the expansion of newly developed urban areas such as Altamira.

Rejecting a linear documentary structure, the book constructs a fragmented and unsettling portrait of the Amazon, where ecological collapse and social instability constantly intersect. The black-and-white photographs, many taken quickly at night, create a sense of disorientation and movement, suggesting events that continue beyond the frame and drawing the viewer through a landscape suspended between reality and nightmare.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
