Interview with Simon Baker

For Arhant Shrestha photography is a way of exploring the invisible. Nepal introduced anti-discrimination reforms in 2007 and recognised a third gender in 2013, yet homophobia and violence persist. A victim of homophobic assault himself, the artist uses carefully staged fictional scenes of Kathmandu’s queer community as a counterpoint to candid flash photographs of crowds of ultra-masculine men at traditional festivals, questioning masculinity, appearance and intimacy.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
