Yoko Ikeda has the extraordinary ability to see beauty in seemingly mundane objects and to elevate them to the rank of precious subjects. Ikeda plays with the shadows, colours, lines and textures she encounters while moving around and observing daily life. By means of her camera, she creates her own way of seeing and showing an outer world that one does not necessarily notice at first glance. In Ikeda's compositions, there is often no point of reference. Space is flattened and abstract, the place is ambiguous. She experiments with unusual viewpoints and focuses. Ikeda seeks contrasts of form and light and uses unexpected framings. The book pays tribute to this prolific work through a sequence of multiple plays of associations that could be described as musical, thus giving the book its title. Extract from the preface by Annemarie Zethof.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
