The legendary series The Somnambulist was published in 1970. It forms the first part of The Trilogy, completed by the series Déjà‑Vu (1973) and Days at Sea (1974).

The book The Somnambulist overturns the codes of traditional photography‑book publishing, which at the time was dominated by photojournalism.

Ralph Gibson, deeply influenced by the French New Wave cinema and the Nouveau Roman, conceived a new‑kind of book, deploying his photographic language through a layout in which the images, unaccompanied by text, are sufficient unto themselves.

After being rejected by traditional publishing houses, Ralph Gibson decided to publish the book himself and founded his own publishing house, Lustrum Press.

The book, regarded as a work of art in its own right, achieved worldwide success.

This edition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the series The Somnambulist and accompanies the exhibition at Galerie Thierry Bigaignon.

Limited edition of 50 numbered copies, each with a unique cover.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
