With Friction, Margaret Lansink calls for an embrace of the unavoidable change and impermanence of life. She photographed professional ballet dancers who had to retire at the age of 35 and the rough nature of Death Valley in California, where time and age play no role. Connecting these two subjects, she encourages a flowing with the ever-changing world. Lansink believes that in change, beauty is to be found: beauty to rekindle thoughts, ideas, human connections, society, the bond with nature and most importantly the self. The work also addresses the ongoing friction between men and women: as Simone de Beauvoir wrote, one is not born but rather becomes a woman — a feeling of inequality still persistent in society.
