Hong Kong is a place of strong contrasts: a claustrophobic urban environment surrounded by water and uncontained nature. The photographer lived there with the family between 2014 and 2022. Every now and then, walking through the city, a tram would go past with its destination sign reading Happy Valley, its terminal stop. In those moments, when the weight of the city is on your shoulders, that name offers a sense of hope. With the aid of visual metaphors, the book analyses the photographer’s own relationship with the city, in an attempt to draw a portrait of Hong Kong and its complex, multilayered realities.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
