Hans Zeeldieb dreamed of America: arriving in New York by sea and becoming a millionaire. He wanted to leave, to cross an ocean, to travel slowly and photograph slowly. From port to port, to pass the time and eat better, he made pictures, finding his share of sociability while satisfying a compulsive desire to portray others. Two Mississippi and it was in the box: a new face in his collection, a new photograph to be given to a lover or a mother, to sit on a sideboard or be forgotten, folded into a pocket or torn up before his eyes. When he finally landed in the United States, more than a year and a half later, it was winter and legions of homeless people were migrating south; he forgot his dreams of grandeur and nestled into the warmth of New Orleans. The images are the fruit of a voyage between 2016 and 2018 that took him from Douarnenez to the Aber Wrac’h, via Iquitos, Bogotá, New Orleans, Recife and a thousand other stops.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
