Madre Tierra proposes a set of visual reflections on landscape, life and the environment. Through the work of three authors, the volume recreates complementary yet very different visions of the natural surroundings: John Davies is inspired by the domesticated European ecosystem, Edward Burtynsky by the great panoramas of North America, and Rinko Kawauchi by the detailing of the fleeting typical of the East. In their images aesthetics, hidden meanings and emotions mix with politics, history, everyday reality and visual culture. The British Landscapes, by John Davies (Sedgefield, 1949), is a portrait of how the picturesque English landscape, tamed by human action, is invaded by the consequences of postindustrial society and urbanism: nuclear power stations and housing populate the beautiful English slopes. The work of Edward Burtynsky (Toronto, 1955) is also a study of landscape altered by postindustrial civilisation, with images of refineries and mines.
