Thomas Demand's work is strongly tied to his training in sculpture. He usually works from pre-existing images of a historical nature, which he turns into life-size paper and cardboard models in order to photograph them and then destroy them. Demand offers a neat, clean vision of reality; his rigorous, formal technique reflects on the role of the image, which in his work moves between the documentary and the staged. This book gathers images from the series Poll (2001), the reconstruction of one of the Florida centres where votes were counted during the convulsive American elections of 2000; Yellowcake (2007), images that explore the Niger Embassy in Rome, where documents were supposedly found that the US government would use to justify the invasion of Iraq; and Tavern (2006), a work that reveals a bar in the German village of Burbach where a child was murdered by a gang of friends. It also includes stills from the videos Camera and Rain, and from the 35 mm films Recorder (2002), Tunnel (1999) and Escalator (2000), which show the growing importance of the audiovisual in Demand's artistic production.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
