Essay by Christian Cajoulle
Winner of the 2005 European Publishers Award for Photography

Anyone who has been to Cuba will have been struck by the physical presence of colour in this jewel of the Caribbean; by the luxuriance of the sunsets and by the way that, at different hours of the day, the light intensifies the colours. For Lorenzo Castore, in his dynamic photographs of Cuba and Mexico, colour is everything. He uses it in extraordinary ways, conveying a rich sense of place and atmosphere. The resulting images are revealing and powerful. The subjects he chooses: the bars, the cafes, the streets, the everyday. Now in its twelfth year the Leica European Publishers Award is a collaboration between six European publishers. Each year the winning project is published in six countries (England, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece) and in six language editions. Previous winners include Simon Norfolk, Bruce Gilden, Dario Mittidieri and Jeff Mermelstein.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
