Yasuhide Kuge's book begins with images of a large number of music cassette tapes photographed about twenty years ago with a large-format camera. The cassette replaced the vinyl record and was in high demand in its day, yet in hindsight it too fell out of favour. For music lovers of the time, however, it was an inevitable invention and a medium for images, and the songs and the time they spanned were inevitable for those who listened.

The book also contains landscapes of sun-dried salt fields in Brittany, France, including aerial views; a record of Kuge testing Alfred Stieglitz's Equivalents theory in his own studio; and partial views of sculptures made with the latest digital cameras. Edited around three themes closely related to the medium, affordance, contingency and redundancy, it gives viewers a chance to reconsider the concept of time specific to the photographic image. Texts by Kuge, the skin scientist Mitsuhiro Denda ('When phenomena encounter each other') and the artist Motohiro Tomii ('Innocent forms').

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
