In 1972, still a student at a photography school, Yoshiichi Hara headed for the Tohoku region on a ten-day trip, setting himself the task of shooting ten rolls of film a day, 360 frames, one every two minutes. Back in Tokyo he developed the negatives at a high temperature, so that the emulsion peeled off and the scenes of Tohoku remained as afterimages (zanzo). The prints earned him a solo exhibition at Nikon Salon in Ginza in 1973. With deep contrast, the black-and-white photographs capture splenetic scenes and sceneries of a region where the old rural life was being chased by modernity, both a document and an impression of a facet of Japan that is now gone. The book includes an afterword by Hara, in Japanese and English, in which he recalls doubting whether he had any talent but never losing his resolve to become a photographer.
