Jizo statues are a common sight in Japan, especially in rural areas: stone figures that serve as places of prayer and protection, often placed in roadside shrines or in and near cemeteries. For this posthumously published photobook, Itaru Hatta (1945-2023) researched and documented such statues in his home region of Misato, in Mie Prefecture. Each page features a different jizo site, most of them well maintained but many forgotten and barely recognizable. Incorporating stories and information shared with him by Misato's aging residents, Hatta created an invaluable and inspiring catalogue of local folklore. In the afterword he recalls noticing, as he grew older and looked back on his hometown, many nobotoke, Buddha statues in the wilderness. All text is in Japanese and English.
