The photographs began with a dream. About 49 days after the photographer Annu Aalto died of a sudden illness, at the age of 45, her parents visited Sokyusha to donate her unused films, and the friend Eri Tatara was given 32 rolls. That night Aalto appeared in a dream saying she wanted to take photographs. Tatara woke at dawn, loaded the film into her camera and left home at around six; as she began shooting she heard her friend's voice say that the world is so beautiful. The pictures carry the dizziness of thinking about those one will never see again, with everything that has left this world reaching the photographer from afar. Aalto, the author of Time As River (Sokyusha, 2019), died in 2022; the images were born by chance when her unused colour negative film reached a friend and fellow photographer, and they show that bonds do not disappear when a person dies but grow stronger.
