- Four projects drawn from the photographic holdings of the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía
Essay by Carmen Tostado Gutiérrez
Todos somos aquello explores the holdings of the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía (MAF), made up of nearly two million images produced throughout the twentieth century by the photographers who worked for the Government of Mexico City, who recorded the progress of public works, political events and social happenings. It brings together four projects: Christiane Burkhard explores the archive as if it were an archaeological site, in order to meet the primordial matter: earth and water; Patricia Lagarde enters into dialogue with the images of the holdings in order to create new fictions about a city that crumbles with earthquakes; Carmen Tostado crosses the historiography of a cathartic year, 1968, when rumours, espionage, fear and celebration coexisted in the streets of Mexico City; and 80 years of 20 de Noviembre Avenue is the result of two independent workshops by Francisco Mata Rosas and Juan José Ochoa on the opening of the avenue, which at the time caused a fierce controversy about the city that was to be built in the 1930s. The book traces in forgotten photographs the city that sleeps in the archive, reminds us of the city we were, and awakens with each search.
