In this photobook Rosalba Bustamante goes through the life of a little girl and at the same time that of her father, marking similarities between them but focusing on a repressed childhood that could be the cause of later decisions, such as choosing a medical specialty as bloody as traumatology, in which she was almost always in contact with blood and with definitive procedures such as amputations. Rosalba tells anecdotes from both her childhood and her practice as a medical specialist, accompanied by archive images, and the photobook is completed with solarigraphs, an important part of her personal work, made by placing 32 pinhole cameras on rooftops in the city of Oaxaca for eighteen months, which recorded both the path of the sun and the great earthquake of 2017. These abstract, intensely coloured images reflect a deeply difficult period of her life after leaving medicine, in which she sank into depression and anxiety. The story draws an analogy with phantom limb syndrome, in which a patient continues to feel an amputated limb, with the persistent presence of the father long after his death. Separation, mutilation, wounds, ruptures and amputations are the common thread, both in the story and in the physical structure of the book, which has to be cut in order to be seen.
