Known and Strange Things Pass reflects on the profound entanglement between technology and contemporary life, exploring how digital systems shape our perception of distance, connection and reality itself. At the centre of the project are the transatlantic communication cables linking the UK and North America, though the work expands far beyond their physical presence to consider wider networks of relation and interdependence.

The photographs were made on both sides of the Atlantic in places where the Internet becomes materially concentrated — sites where immense flows of online activity pass through fragile underwater infrastructures stretched across the seabed between continents.

Through the parallel vastness of the ocean and the Internet, the project confronts entities that are conceptually understandable yet physically impossible to fully grasp. What appears stable, ordinary and familiar is revealed instead as part of larger, invisible systems extending across time and space.

Structured through layered and interwoven sequences, the work allows different temporalities and realities to coexist. As the images unfold, distinctions between near and distant, physical and virtual, natural and technological begin to dissolve, suggesting a world where boundaries are increasingly fluid and interconnected.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
