A book of self-portraits by Mika Ninagawa, introduced by an essay from her father, the theatre director Yukio Ninagawa, titled 'The sound of acorns falling in the wind'. He writes that the portraits show little trace of the conflict photographers often feel between the self that photographs and the self that is photographed, and he recognises in her gaze, peering out of dark gradations damped by shadow, an intuition and an ability to choose among fractions of a second that approach natural, animal instinct. He prizes tense, fleeting instants, moments of held breath, and ends by recalling the bars and swing set in his yard where she played as a child. The 45 pictures run from black-and-white faces and hands in dim interiors to flowers and lips in saturated colour. The red cloth cover comes in three versions: a face in close-up, a figure at a window and a dark hand.
