Since 2000 Katsumi Omori has photographed cherry blossom (sakura) in bloom all over Japan, a flower that marks the heyday of spring and has long been regarded as one of the country's prominent cultural symbols. Rather than concentrating on the blossom itself, he tries to convey the direct experience of coming across it while walking in the mountains. The book gathers 13 photographs, reproduced with precise colour rendering and crisp detail, in which cherry trees appear among and beyond trees with young leaves and draw the gaze into the space. Light, wind, sound and air, an atmosphere that cannot really be reproduced, come almost tangible on the page, and the book brings back the sense of elevation that returns once every year.
