The streets of Shanghai seen through the eyes of a Japanese photographer. In his photobook “Shanghai”, Japanese photographer Hiroyuki Nakada presents photography taken on the streets of the Chinese megacity. Nakada, who moved from Japan to China in 1999, and his sensibilities are neither “in” nor “out”; his photographs – many of them focusing on faces – reveal the curiosity of an outsider and the knowledge of an insider. “I point the camera at my subjects without warning. My subjects are neither models nor actors, just ordinary citizens. I can’t help but feel excited seeing the horror somewhere in the depths of expressions on people’s faces in everyday life. Seeing them fulfills me. That is why I still devour them even today, like a hyena that has found its prey.” — from Hiroyuki Nakada’s statement (translation by shashasha)

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
