As the on-set photographer of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, Stephen Vaughan watched the making of one of cinema's most revered films from the shadows. The first book drawn from his archive, discovered after his death in 2018 by his executor, the screenwriter and producer Dionne Jones, it reverse-engineers the film through the original contact sheets and other ephemera from his personal collection: a collage of unseen images that celebrates Scott's 1982 masterpiece in a new way and offers devotees of the cult film a deeper, more personal look at its making. Original essays by the actress Joanna Cassidy, the Blade Runner scholar Paul Sammon, the television writer Bill Fordes, the novelist Joanne McNeil and Dionne Jones accompany the pictures. The contact sheets show film strips with their frame numbers, among them cast and crew gathered around the actors on set.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
